Greetings from post-vacation! I last wrote on the eve of our flight to Colorado as I packed with excitement for our days of snowboarding ahead. We had a wonderful trip, and now have a few calm weeks ahead of us before plenty of celebrations and events in April. With birthdays, Easter, and Lone Star Round Up all next month, it’s always one of our busiest times that I greatly look forward to!
These pics were the last ones from our trip to my hometown, Dalhart. We spent an afternoon at the XIT rodeo grounds and Lake Rita Blanca. The annual XIT Rodeo and Reunion was always one of the biggest things to happen in our small town. It’s three days every August of a free feed for anyone and everyone, followed by a professional rodeo, and ending with a live band and dance each evening. The XIT ranch funded the building of Texas’s state capitol, so it was always a fact that made me proud of the role my little town played in Texas’s history.
My best rodeo inspired outfit started with my Corral cowboy boots that I’ve had for close to ten years. They only get better with age! They’re classic brown with embroidery, and I’ve always been glad I bought such a timeless style. Paired with some Levi’s and my long sherpa coat, I felt like I might’ve just come out of Bonanza. I wore this designer-collaboration Madewell x Karen Walker ruffled top (last seen on the blog here) with a long pendant necklace. It was my take on a traditional button down with a bolo.
We took our time walking around and letting Merritt play and explore. We even let her drive for the first time! There’s plenty of flat open dirtland down by the water, so she stood on Blake’s lap in the driver’s seat and turned the steering wheel as we idled around. It was such a fun experience that we wouldn’t get to do with her in a big city! And though she’s too young to remember, she’ll have the story and the memory of it through us.
