Lately I’ve been cleaning out every nook and cranny of my house, tossing all the old, unused items that quietly accumulate in my cabinets, drawers, closets, and shelves over time. I find myself getting sudden inspiration to declutter a space while going about my day. It’s been so helpful to simply act on the motivation when it hits rather than mentally note it as a task I need to do at a later time. Consequently, in the first six weeks of this year, I’ve cleaned the junk out of my pantry, linen closet, coat closet, under stairs closet, my bedroom closet and shelves, my bathroom drawers and cabinets, desk drawers, and honestly so much more!
For example, as I was removing my makeup before bed one night, I opened a bathroom sink drawer and realized there were quite a few items I didn’t need. Without thinking, I began to pull out everything I no longer use and tossed it, and then did the same for my other three drawers. It took no more than ten minutes and I instantly felt freer! On another occasion, I ran out of hangers whilst putting away laundry. Then and there I started pulling items off hangers that I hadn’t worn in years and forming “sell” and “donate” piles. It turned into a two-hour effort, but my closet has never been in better shape!
One perk of all my decluttering is that I have more clarity about the things I value, the products I want to continue using, and the styles and brands that are lasting and timeless. This outfit has some of my favorite brands and pieces of clothing that I believe are good staples for every closet. I bought this mock neck top and velvet peplum cami from J. Crew. The fitted top is one of those staples. I’ve already worn it under this puffed vest and anticipate wearing it under spring dresses when the weather warms up. J. Crew is a store that I shop from time and again.
This sherpa coat is a new purchase and I can’t stop wearing it. Plan to see it often on the blog during this final part of winter! I consider it essential to have at least one to two quality, warm coats for the winter. I have more than a couple, but I’ve added them one at a time and built up my collection of jackets over the years. This one is neutral and has looked amazing with everything I’ve paired it with!
As a result of my spontaneous, ongoing cleaning, I’ve not only gained physical space in my house, I’ve gained mental and emotional space for growth and new experiences in the future. Since it’s been a process of cleaning one thing at a time, it has never felt overwhelming. I encourage you to try it the next time you’re going about your normal day and realize the catch-all drawer is made up of things you won’t miss, or your coat closet has some old jackets you haven’t worn in years. Seize the moment and clean it out! In a couple months you’ll be amazed at how much you’ve accomplished by simply tackling small tasks one by one. Do you have any secrets for keeping organized on a day-to-day basis? Leave a comment and tell me!
