Ahhh — Fourth of July weekend spent lounging on the lake with friends. Is there any better way to celebrate America’s day of independence? Add in a refreshing glass of red-white-and-blue champagne and a couple of floating swans, and you’d be hard pressed to convince me otherwise. If you’ve read my About page, you know that Blake and I spend a lot of time on the many lakes of Austin. We spent the fourth on a party boat watching the fireworks display over Lake Austin in what has become a yearly tradition for us, and when our friends invited us for some picnicking and pontooning on Lake Travis the next day, we were excited to get back out on the water for some relaxing and sun-basking.
I for one couldn’t wait to put on this new swimsuit that I had snagged from Victoria’s Secret Semi-Annual Sale. Every summer when it comes around I can’t wait to load up on a ton of new swimwear at completely ridiculous prices. It only seemed natural to pair this top with my blue maxi skirt and gold chain embellished sandals to add a little americana edge; topped off with my green aviators and my hair pulled back with the cutest yellow striped hair tie, I had the perfect wind-proof outfit for a day of cruising and sunning on the water.
We started the afternoon with a cruise across the lake to marvel at how high the water has risen this summer. If you’re an Austinite, you know that this was the first summer in many years that Lake Travis was accessible by a public boat ramp. Texas’ drought has been so bad and the water so low that it was incredible to see how far the lake has risen in just one rainy spring season. ‘Sometimes Island’ (as dubbed by locals), which just a few months ago had 5-foot tall tree growth from having been out of water for so long, is now completely submersed — a sight we haven’t seen in quite a few years!
After cruising and taking in the wonder of Mother Nature, we anchored in Little Devil’s, an offshoot of the popular party spot Devil’s Cove, and spent the rest of the afternoon floating, snacking, sipping, and sunbathing the day away. We finished the evening with a beautiful sunset boat ride back to dock and were humbly reminded of the greatness of our free country.
How did you celebrate your freedom this weekend? I’d love to hear about it!
