This season is the best time to get creative with layering pieces. It’s not too hot to be mostly covered, and not too cold to show a little skin. I love the versatility of fall! It really allows for a wide range of outfits to wear, and layering makes its easy to add or remove clothes to adjust throughout the day. There’s one item I consider a staple for a fall wardrobe which I talked about here. It’s this cardigan and it’s my favorite thing to layer with my fall outfits.
By using layering pieces and switching up accessories, it’s easy to wear a summer dress like this cream linen shift dress all the way into fall. I paired my fuzzy chenille cardigan over the dress for a light layer to keep the morning chill off. As the afternoon warmed up, it was nice to be able to pare down to a light linen dress to adjust to the rising temps. I can’t say enough good things about this cardigan! It’s my most worn item of clothing this fall. I wore it several times a week to the office when I was still working in the corporate world, which is often a chilly environment. It’s also the first thing I grab each morning as I get out of bed to cozy up and drink my coffee before the sun comes up.
I love this linen shift dress for creating different outfits because the neutral color and simple style make it easy to change the look with any type of accessories you want. While I would’ve worn this dress during summer with wedges and a pastel-toned bag, it easily transitions for fall by adding my favorite mid-calf black boots and a burgundy crossbody bag. The dark accessories make it perfectly appropriate for the season. Add some socks to peek out over the top of the boots for a finished look.
If you live somewhere that your fall season isn’t very warm, you can still wear an outfit like this by adding a few more simple accessories. I would pair tights and a fitted mockneck or turtleneck underneath the dress to cover my arms and legs, and a larger piece of outerwear over the cardigan for extra warmth. The trick to layering is to wear things that are easy enough to remove a piece here or there so you can adjust to changing environments and weather.
