Next month we leave on our annual trip to Vail, CO for snowboarding and visiting family. It has me thinking about what I’ll pack and my favorite pieces for winter layering. These are things I take on all of our cold weather destinations!
A Fitted Shirt
One of the best layering pieces is a fitted shirt like this J. Crew mockneck top. I love fitted shirts because they stay in place underneath your layers. Thanks to our mild south Texas winters, I didn’t need another layer on this particular day. But for colder weather you can layer everything from a sweater, cardigan, blazer, or light jacket on top with another larger overcoat for extra warmth. Pick a fitted shirt that has long sleeves and a high collar for even more warmth.

An Oversized Coat
Next on my winter layering necessities list is an oversized coat. With an extra-roomy coat, you can pack in a few layers underneath for maximum coziness. Look for one that has a loose fit with a sleek cut so as not to add bulkiness, like this buffalo plaid coat from Zara. The large side pockets are chic and useful for stowing gloves or mittens. I rolled the cuffs to let my 3/4 length sleeves peek out.

Base Layer Leggings
I can’t write about winter layering techniques without mentioning my favorite fashion hack for cold weather outfits: wearing base layer leggings beneath my jeans. I probably say this every winter, but the truth remains: they’re my single best hack for staying warm (and also completely invisible). I wear the same Hot Chilly’s leggings that I wear for snowboarding under all my jeans during winter and it saves me from shivering and chattering when I’m outside.

I will definitely be packing all of these things when we head to the mountains next month! Do you have any fashion hacks for layering up and staying warm in the winter? Tell me in the comments below!
